A photojournalist gets close to a co-worker as she shoots her family’s annual holiday party for a cover story.

“20/20: A Captive Student” (9 p.m., ABC)

Correspondent Eva Pilgrim reports on the 2017 kidnapping of 15-year-old high school student Elizabeth Thomas by her 50-year-old teacher Tad Cummins, in Maury County, Tennessee. Cummins became the subject of a nationwide manhunt in 2017 after he took Thomas from Tennessee to California, where the two were found after more than a month on the lam. Cummins is serving a 20-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to various charges in April 2019, The Tennessean newspaper reported.

Pilgrim interviews Thomas as well as teachers, law enforcement and others close to the case. We also get Cummins in a never-before-seen police interview.

“Dateline: Safari Story” (9 p.m., NBC)

A hunting safari in Zambia’s Kafue National Park ends in a nightmare when a shot rings out from the cabin of dentist Dr. Larry Rudolph and his wife Bianca.
