Watch as four red cards are issued after 90th minute of Sporting KC’s win over Rapids

In the 90th minute of what would be a 2-1 Sporting Kansas City win over the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night, there were 22 players on the pitch at Children’s Mercy Park.

When the final whistle blew, there were just 18 player.

This wasn’t a sci-fi movie or the rapture. Things just turned ugly and four red cards were issued.

Here’s the low down:

  • 90+1: Rapids’ Auston Trusty picks up his second yellow card

  • 90+6: Rapids’ Lucas Esteves gets red card for violent conduct

  • 90+6: Sporting’s Andreu Fontàs gets red card for violent conduct

  • 90+9: Sporting’s Dániel Sallói gets red card for violent conduct

That’s a lot of violent conduct, eh? Here is how things transpired, via Major League Soccer.

Here is how the big brouhaha started (video from Twitter user J. Sam Jones):

Paul Carr of Tru Media Sports noted the four red cards tied an MLS record.

“I’m not really sure even how to assess or talk about the officiating, but we certainly didn’t lose the game because of the officiating,” Rapids coach Robin Fraser told reporters. “We lost the game because we didn’t play well enough.

“I’m just glad nobody was seriously hurt given what felt like a loss of control to me.”
