Gran Turismo's first trailer has raced in ahead of its cinema release later this year.

Directed by District 9's Neil Blomkamp, the movie is based on PlayStation's racing series and tells the true life story of Jann Mardenborough, a teenager who became so good at the video game that he eventually became a real race car driver.

Fans knew the trailer was coming today (May 2) after Sony Pictures shared an exciting 15-second teaser yesterday.

The short but thrilling teaser showed a new look at David Harbour in the long-awaited film, fresh from last year's Stranger Things.

Then, Orlando Bloom's character (Danny Moore, a motorsport marketing executive) told Archie Madekwe's Jann: "You will compete for a place in racing history."

This brief clip was intercut with flashing images of high-octane racing, giving fans a glimpse of the heart-pumping thriller the movie looks to promise.

Gran Turismo also stars Geri Halliwell-Horner (yes, from the Spice Girls), Never Have I Ever star Darren Barnet, Shazam! and Guardians of the Galaxy star Djimon Hounsou, Daniel Puig and Thomas Krestchmann.

In January, Sony released a sneak peek of the movie, which again showed flashes of race car brilliance while Bloom also spoke to audiences about what to expect from the picture.

"This movie is made for the cinema," he said. "The audience is going to feel every jolt, every thrill of this racing at 200 miles-per-hour."

In the same video, Harbour, who features as the retired racing driver who trains Jann, describes the film as a "badass, race car action that you’re gonna feel like you're in the middle of."

Gran Turismo will be released in cinemas on August 11.
