England star Georgia Stanway could not resist cheekily reminding her new German team-mates of their recent Women's Euro final defeat to the Lionesses with her choice of initiation song at Bayern Munich.

Stanway, who played in every game of England's successful march to the title, which culminated with victory over Germany last month, opted for Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, the unofficial anthem for both the men's and women's teams.

The win at Wembley secured England's first major football trophy since 1966 and prompted wild scenes of celebrations, including an impromptu player and crowd singalong to Sweet Caroline during the victory parade in Trafalgar Square the day after.

Before the tournament, it was announced that Stanway, who scored the winning goal in England's quarter-final victory over Spain, would be leaving Manchester City to join Bayern as a free agent on a three-year deal.

As is customary for new players to ease integration into their new surroundings, the 23-year-old stood up on a chair and chose Diamond's popular ballad to ingratiate herself to the squad.

In fairness to Stanway's new team-mates, they seemed to take the former Man City midfielder's effort in good spirit and cheered her on despite the well-intentioned but off-key singing.

When Stanway finished she was given a warm ovation by the watching audience, who probably won't be giving her a microphone any time soon.

One person wrote on Twitter: 'It’s a good thing she’s good at football'. While another wondered: "Imagine if she had done Three Lions though…"

Speaking in May when the deal was completed, Stanway was delighted to be making the move to the Frauen-Bundesliga.

"It just feels right," she said. "I can't wait to get started and play for such a well-known club.

"It felt right from the very first conversation. I was absolutely convinced and my instinct told me I belonged here.

"The club is so amazing - the research they did on me, the way the club presented themselves to me and how they can take my game to the next level. Bayern has very big ambitions and I really admire that."
