Is Walmart selling chic clothes now?

To kick off the start of the spring fashion season, Walmart is launching four new private label brands — Time and Tru, Terra & Sky, Wonder Nation, and George — that prioritize style, fit, and comfort. Each taps into a different sector of the fashion marketplace: womenswear, plus, menswear, and kids.

But are the offerings cute?

The majority of the collections would not exactly be considered groundbreaking fashion, but there are still some stylish items up for grabs. On the women’s end, from Time and Tru, you can finally get a pair of those trendy patchwork and frayed-hem jeans for just $20, not to mention a chic minimalist tote bag for just $14 and cute spring bow slides for only $7.

But it’s actually the men’s collection, George, that really stands out. Just in time for you or your man’s next beach vacation come playful cactus or flamingo printed swim trunks for just $10, plus gingham shirts similar to the J.Crew version, in multiple shades, for $15 (as compared to J.Crew’s $60 price tag). One of the best items from the George collection is a pair of camel derby shoes that are just casual enough to be worn on the weekends, but also professional enough to wear to work daily ($26).

The kids line, Wonder Nation, is also a pleasant surprise, with adorable surfer printed shorts or Fenty-Puma inspired pink satin bow slides for $8.

But the brand’s dedicated women’s plus line, Terra & Sky, needs some work, as its designers seem to have paid more attention to fit than style. Although hidden details like elastic bands within pants linings and extra underarm coverage on tanks and blouses are great, the bulk of the collection consists of what can be found everywhere else: basic tops and jeans that aren’t exactly groundbreaking. With the plus-size market expanding at a rapid rate across the fashion industry, with brands like Loft diving in, as are designers like Christian Siriano and Prabal Gurung, Walmart has a lot of catching up to do.

However, what is commendable is Walmart’s dedication to inclusivity in size and price consciousness, with a majority of the pieces in each collection under $30. Time and Tru offers clothing in sizes XS to XXXL; Terra & Sky accommodates plus-size women between 14W and 30W; Wonder Nation offers kids clothing between 4 and 18; and George offers men’s sizes between S and XXXL.

“We listened to our customers and are proud to deliver apparel choices that meet at the intersection of everything they desire: on-trend styles, comfort and quality, all at unbeatable prices,” said Deanah Baker, Walmart’s senior vice president of apparel, in a press release.

Overall, the new in-house brands are an honest effort by Walmart to segue into more stylish territory, but it still needs a lot of work. Especially if Walmart is looking to stand against competitors like Target and Amazon, who have each rolled out their own respective style-conscious collections. Although they all have comparable, affordable price points, the style at Walmart is not on par (yet), but that doesn’t mean that can’t change in the future.
