Walk through stunning Big Sur estate with views of iconic bridge, sea – priced at $20 million

A 78-acre luxury retreat in Big Sur with uninterrupted views of the ocean, mountains and one of the most photographed sites in California — Bixby Bridge — is for sale for $20 million.

Called Bixby Creek Ranch, the compound comprises four structures: a main residence, a guest cottage, a library/studio with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and a beautiful barn that predates the Civil War that and has been updated as an entertainment area with a kitchen and comfortable loft.

The barn, where natural light streams in through tall windows, was uprooted from Ohio and “meticulously deconstructed and re-milled to its current glorious state,” according to the property listing.

Completed in 2015, the compound spans 8,491 square feet of total indoor living space across the four separate structures. There are six bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and three half-baths in all.

In the main house, the well-lit living room, with a massive skylight, features high ceilings and exposed beams. A primary bedroom comes with an en suite bathroom that has dual vanities and a luxurious standalone tub next to a wall of glass. There’s a dining area and large kitchen with a center island, too.

The indoor and outdoor living spaces were designed by well-known Carmel-based architect Mary Ann Shicketanz. The structures use an abundance of natural materials, such as wood and stone.

The hilltop property sits at at 4847 Bixby Creek Road, Carmel, California.

The estate adjoins an additional 300 acres of private preserve with panoramic views of the iconic Bixby Bridge and the Pacific Ocean. There’s an expansive sitting area overlooking the breadth of the sea.

The owners bought the 78-acre parcel back in 1996 for $900,000, according to realtor.com.

“One could spend years exploring the land and never experience the same day,” the listing states. “Bixby Creek Ranch is a legacy property the likes of which is rarely seen and offers a serene, comfortable lifestyle sure to inspire daily from sunrise to sunset.”

Although the stunning property needs no work, a buyer will have options for further development, listing agent Tim Allen with Coldwell Banker Realty told realtor.com.

Permits are already approved to add another guesthouse, pool and other buildings, he told the real estate website.

“What’s important is that you have active building permits,” he said. “To get those can take years.”
