Vote for The Observer’s boys high school athlete of the week (10.07.22)

Here are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer’s boys high school athlete of the week. Readers can vote as often as they want.

This week’s nominees

Ryan Burbank, Charlotte Latin soccer: The Hawks’ senior center back scored game-winning goals in wins over Charlotte Country Day and Covenant Day.

Burbank netted the game-winning goal off a corner kick in 1-0 win at Covenant Day Sept. 28.

The next night, Burbank scored the game-winning goal with 25 minutes left in a 2-1 victory at rival Charlotte Country Day.

Burbank has four goals for Charlotte Latin (9-5-1, 5-2 in the CISAA conference).

Alim Coleman, Hickory Ridge cross-country: The Ragin’ Bulls’ junior ran a 17:54.29 to win the Greater Metro 4A conference meet at Frank Liske Park by 14 seconds over the field Sept. 27.

Coleman’s efforts also helped the Hickory Ridge boys’ cross country team to a 19-point victory at the conference meet.

Maddox Gant, North Iredell cross-country: The Raiders’ sophomore won his first race of the cross country season running an 18:09.37 at West Iredell Sept. 27.

Gant won the race by 13 seconds over the field.

Gant’s effort also helped the North Iredell cross country team to victory in the same event.

Matthew Goodale, Carmel Christian soccer: The Cougars’ senior forward scored two goals and had one assist in Carmel Christian’s 10-1 win over Victory FC Sept. 27.

Carmel Christian (10-1) has won eight straight games through Sunday.

Judah Heis, Pine Lake Prep soccer: The Pride freshman goalkeeper saved all six shots on goal to earn the shutout in a 1-0 win at Community School of Davidson (2021 state semifinalist) Sept. 26.

Heis also had seven saves in a 3-2 win over defending 1A state champion Christ the King Sept. 28.

Heis is allowing just 1.72 goals per game for a Pine Lake Prep team (13-1) that has won 13 consecutive games through Sunday.

Cooper Jason, Mooresville soccer: The Blue Devils’ sophomore goalkeeper had 24 saves, recording two shutouts in wins over Greater Metro 4A conference foes, A.L. Brown and West Cabarrus.

Jason led Mooresville to a 5-0 win over West Cabarrus, Sept. 27, and a 3-0 victory at A.L. Brown Sept. 29.

Ben Martin, Bunker Hill cross-country: The Bears’ senior earned the first cross country victory of high school career, running a 18:10.78 to win the Catawba Valley Athletic conference meet at Bandys Sept. 27.

Martin’s efforts also helped the Bunker Hill boys’ cross country team to a runner-up finish at the same event.

Rylan Sedlacek, Hibriten cross-country: The Panthers’ senior ran a personal-best 17:09 to win the Caldwell County Championships at Lenoir Aquatics and Fitness Center by 38 seconds over the field Sept. 28.

Sedlacek’s run also helped the Hibriten boys’ cross country team to a runner-up finish to South Caldwell at the same meet.
