Vote for the News & Observer’s boys high school athlete of the week (05.22.22)

Here are this week’s nominees for the News & Observer’s boys high school athlete of the week:

Gabe Adams, North Johnston Baseball: The Panthers’ sophomore went 7.2 innings, striking out nine batters, while allowing only one run on six hits in a 2-1 win over James Kenan that went eight innings in the opening round of the 2A state playoffs, Mary 10.

Adams also went 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored in a 10-0 win over Pasquotank County in the second round of the playoffs, May 12.

North Johnston is 18-5 overall this season.

Simon Burgos, Leesville Road Golf: The Pride senior shot 74-75 to finish five-over par (149) and come in third-place overall at the 4A State Championship at Pinehurst No. 8, May 9-10.

Burgos, the top finisher from Wake County, had six birdies in the two day event.

Burgos will continue his golf career at Guilford College.

James Cardillo, Middle Creek Lacrosse: The Mustangs’ junior attacker scored three goals and had four assists in a 17-7 win over Holly Springs in the third round of the 4A state playoffs, May 10.

Cardillo also scored three goals and had one assist in a 12-4, 4A state quarterfinal win over Green Level, May 12.

Cardillo has 46 goals and 31 assists for a Middle Creek team (21-2) that has won 13 straight games this season.

Lance Garrett, Rolesville Track: The Rams’ senior won the 110-meter hurdles (14.83) and the 300-meter hurdles (41.14) at the 4A East Regionals at Wilmington Hoggard High, May 13.

Garrett also finished sixth-place in the high jump (6-0) at regionals the same day.

Tim Kaufman, Cary Academy Golf: The Chargers’ sophomore shot a two-under par, 70, to win the NCISAA State Qualifier at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, May 9.

Kaufman was the top scorer amongst 81 players in the event.

John LePage, Neuse Charter Track: The Cougars’ senior ran a personal-best 52.86 to finish as runner-up in the 400-meter dash at the 1A Mideast Regionals at Franklinton High, May 14.

LePage helped his Neuse Charter team to an 11th-place finish.

Walker Norris, North Raleigh Christian Track: The Knights’ sophomore won all four events that he competed in to earn the TISAC Conference’s championships’ most outstanding performer at Cary Academy, May 12-14.

Norris won the triple jump in a personal-best 44-4.5, breaking an 11-year old, conference meet record in the process.

He also won the long jump (22-4.25), the 100-meter dash (personal-record, 11.36) and anchored the 4 X 200-meter relay to victory at the same meet.

The North Raleigh Christian boys’ track team was runner-up to Cary Academy at the TISAC conference championships.

Andre Whitaker-Myart, Northern Durham Track: The Knights’ senior won the 100-meter dash in 10.76 at the 4A Mideast Regional at Apex Friendship, May 14.

Whitaker-Myart, a Fort Scott Community College commit, also ran a personal-best 21.50 to win the 4A Mideast Regional, 200-meter dash title.
