Here are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer defensive player of the week. Polls close Friday and readers can vote as often as they want.

This week’s nominees

Keyaan Abdul-Rahim, Providence Day: 15 tackles, including three tackles for a loss and one pass broken up in Thursday’s 55-20 win over Charlotte Country Day.

Mason Avery, West Lincoln: in a 35-34 loss to Bunker Hill, Avery ran 23 times for 215 yards and four touchdowns. On defense, he had 12 tackles, one assist and two tackles for a loss. He also caught a pass for 19 yards.

Win Byerley, Myers Park: punted seven times for a 43.7 yard average in Thursday’s loss to Ardrey Kell. He has committed to Harvard.

Ben Cutter, East Lincoln: in Thursday’s 50-0 win over West Iredell, Cutter had 15 tackles, including one tackle for a loss.

Xavier Esquillien, Ardrey Kell: eight tackles, two for a loss, plus a sack, a forced fumble, three quarterback pressures and a receiving touchdown in a win at Myers Park Thursday.

Jason Hertz, Porter Ridge: In a 27-21 win over rival Marvin Ridge, Hertz had a tipped pass in overtime that led to an interception and the game-winning drive. He had four tackles and five quarterback pressures.

Logan McIlveen, Providence: in a 40-28 loss to Mooresville, McIlveen, a defensive back, had two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

David Sanders, Providence Day: Sophomore two-way lineman had the highest grade among his offensive line teammates in Thursday’s 55-20 win over Charlotte Country Day. On defense, he had four tackles, one pass breakup and three quarterback hurries.

Jack Smith, Pine Lake Prep: in a 21-10 win over Christ The King, the sophomore defensive tackle had eight tackles, four for a loss and three sacks.

Ben Watson, Newton-Conover: senior linebacker had 24 Tackles (14 solo, 10 assists) with one tackle for a loss, one sack and a fumble recovery in Thursday’s 28-20 win over East Burke.

Jay Wilson, Mooresville: In a 40-28 come-from-behind win over Providence, Wilson had a game-sealing interception, plus six tackles and three pass breakups.

Luke Wilson, East Burke: in a 28-20 loss to Newton-Conover, Wilson had a team-high 15 tackles.

Stephan Zayachkowsky, Porter Ridge: In a 27-21 win over Marvin Ridge, Zayachkowsky had an interception in overtime, 10 tackles plus 129 yards rushing and three scores.
