Vote for The Charlotte Observer girls high school athlete of the week (12.09.22)

Here are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer’s girls high school athlete of the week. Readers may vote as often as they want. Polls close Friday.

This week’s nominees

Nina Dominique, Charlotte Christian Indoor Track: The Knights’ sophomore ran the nation’s best time this season (7.00), which was also a personal and school record, to win the 55-meter dash at the Liberty University High School Opener Dec. 3.

Dominique also ran a personal and school record 40.20, to win the 300-meter dash, which was also the nation’s second fastest time this season.

Nevaeh Farmer, North Mecklenburg Basketball: The 5-foot-4 senior point guard scored 35 points, had three rebounds, three assists and five steals in a 68-58 win over Catawba Ridge Dec. 2.

The next day, Farmer poured in 36 points to go with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, in a 67-66 loss to Lake Norman.

North Mecklenburg, No. 2 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll, is 5-1 through Sunday.

Savannah Fowler, Mount Pleasant Swimming: The Tigers’ senior beat her regional time from a year ago, swimming a 1:18.61 to win the 1000 butterfly in a tri-meet with Carson and East Rowan Dec. 1.

Fowler also swam a personal-best 1:29.22 to finish as runner-up in the 100 breaststroke in the same meet as the Mount Pleasant girls’ swimming team also won the competition.

Fowler also owns the best 50 freestyle time (29.73) on her team this season.

Brooklyn Gibson, West Iredell Basketball: The 5-foot-8 senior scored 26 points to go with 10 rebounds and five steals to give West Iredell a 53-51 win at Maiden, snapping a 31-game losing streak Dec. 2.

Gibson made a half-court buzzer to end the third quarter in the same game.

Kendal Hudson, Mooresville Indoor Track: The Blue Devils’ senior ran a personal-best 9.51 to finish third in the 55-meter hurdles at the Marvin Ridge Cold Turkey Invitational Dec. 3.

Hudson shaved .34 seconds off of her previous personal-best time.

Hudson also went 15-6 in the long jump for a runner-up finish in the same event.

Kailyn Kilpatrick, Lake Norman Charter Basketball: The 5-foot-9 senior scored a career-high 20 points to go with two rebounds, two assists and three steals in a 44-39 win at Hough Nov. 29.

Kilpatrick is averaging 11.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, two steals and one assist per game for Lake Norman Charter (3-0 through Sunday).

Maddie Lusk, Lincoln Charter Basketball: The 5-foot-8 senior point guard scored 20 points, including five three-pointers, and had four assists, two rebounds and two steals in only 26 minutes of action to lead Lincoln Charter to a 62-17 win over West Caldwell Nov. 29.

Lusk also had 16 points, including four three-pointers, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 57-49 victory at Porter Ridge Dec. 2.

Lincoln Charter is 4-3 through Sunday.

Taylor Parker, Hickory Grove Basketball: The 6-foot-1 senior had 18 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks in a 44-32 win over Metrolina Christian Dec. 2.

Parker also had 22 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in a win at SouthLake Christian Nov. 29.

Parker is averaging 21.8 points and eight rebounds per game for Hickory Grove (4-2 through Sunday).

Bianca Robinson, Albemarle Basketball: The 6-foot-1 sophomore had 24 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks in a 65-50 win at North Rowan Nov. 29.

Albemarle (2-1) also beat West Stanly 71-41 Dec. 2.

I’Ja Walter, Olympic track: The Trojans’ junior ran a personal-best 7.31 to win the 55-meter dash at the Titan Clash at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem Dec. 1.

Walter also ran a personal-record, 40.80, to win the 300-meter dash at the same event.
