Vote for The Charlotte Observer’s boys track athlete of the year

Here are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer’s boys track athlete of the year. To be considered, an athlete had to be a state champion or have the state’s top time in his event as of Sunday, May 22.

Private/1A/2A Boys

Moise Bennett, Charlotte Christian: won the 110 hurdles at the NCISAA Div. I finals in a time of 15.03. Won the 300 hurdles in 39.51.

Richard Black III, Westminster Catawba: Won NCISAA Div. III 400-meters (50.51)

Kenneth Byrd, East Burke: Won the NCHSAA 2A pole vault (15-4).

Quentin Clarke, Cannon School: won the 400-meters at the NCISAA Div. I finals in a time of 48.28.

Ali Currie, Albemarle: Won the NCHSAA 1A triple jump (46-8).

Jacob Fiorillo, Corvian Community: won the NCHSAA 1,600 and 3,200 meters in 4:27.79 and 9:57.40

Kyron Jones, Charlotte Christian: won the 100-meter dash at the NCISAA Div. I finals in a time of 10.60. Also won the 200 in 21.60.

Vance Jones, Patton: Won the NCHSAA 2A 800-meter title (1:55.76)

Nikolaos Koveos, Hickory Grove: Won NCISAA Div. II 400-meters (51.80)

Ezra Martin, Union Academy: won the NCHSAA 1A long jump (21-9.25)

Tyrese Miller, R-S Central: Won the NCHSAA 2A high jump (6-6)

Spencer Mermans, Charlotte Country Day: Won NCISAA Div. I shot put with a toss of 56-9.25. Second place was 49-6.25. Mermans also won the discus with a toss of 178-08. Second place was 144-11.

Trevin Moyer, Mountain Island Charter: Won the NCHSAA 1A 100-meters (10.66), 200 (21.78) and 400 (46.97) and was named championship meet MVP.

Gabriel Orina, Northside Christian: Won the NCISAA Div. III discus (111-09).

Jose Ramos, Victory Christian: Won the NCISAA Div. III 300 meter hurdles (43.11)

3A/4A Boys

Blaise Atkinson, Lake Norman Charter: Won the NCHSAA 3A 110 hurdles (14.02), the 300 hurdles (37.98)

Brandon Benitez, Porter Ridge: Has state’s top outdoor time in the 400 hurdles (55.48).

Xavier Branker, Ardrey Kell: Won the NCHSAA 4A 110 hurdles (14.38) and the 300 hurdles (38.16)

Austin Brotemarkle, Forestview: Won the NCHSAA 3A 3,200 (9:30.90)

Clayton Carroll, Hough: has the state’s top 1,500 meter time outdoors (4:30.13).

Killian Fahy, Cuthbertson: Won the NCHSAA 4A 400-meters (47.23)

Graham Gutknecht, South Mecklenburg: Won the NCHSAA 4A pole vault (15-10).

Jacob Laney, Porter Ridge: Won the NCHSAA 4A 3,200 meters (9:13.12)

Zachary Moore, Sun Valley: Won the NCHSAA 4A wheelchair shot put (11-9.5)

Gavin Sweeney, Lake Norman: holds the state’s top time in the 2K steeplechase (6:12.67).

Caden Townshend, Weddington: Won the NCHSAA 4A 1,600 meters (4:08.30)

Zachary Willer, Stuart Cramer: Won the NCHSAA 3A 1,600-meters (4:19.86)
