Volcanic Rock Boils Water as Geologists Gather Samples From La Palma Eruption

Geologists demonstrated the heat of the volcanic rock from the lava flows of La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano by using it to immediately boil water, in video posted on September 23.

In the footage posted by the Instituto Geológico y Minero de España, a team wearing protective clothing uses a large metal spading fork to remove a rock sample from the lava flow in the village of Todoque.

The rock is then dropped into a bucket of water which instantly boils the water and one of the team is seen measuring the rising vapour.

“Powerful explosions” continued to be registered at the volcano on September 23 following its initial eruption on September 19, according to official reports. Credit: Instituto Geologico y Minero de Espana via Storyful
