'The Voice': Gwen Stefani snags California singer from bickering Blake Shelton, John Legend

Girl power reigns on “The Voice,” and Gwen Stefani led the pack Tuesday night.

Stefani emerged victorious during the fourth round of blind auditions when she scored Tanner Howe, a 29-year-old independent artist from Huntington Beach, California. Howe’s soaring cover of “Mercy” by Shawn Mendes not only earned him a three-chair turn from Stefani and coaches Blake Shelton and John Legend, it also created some friction between Shelton and Legend.

“Your voice sounds really good down low. It was a little bit inaccurate down there, but once you got up in that tenor section of your voice, it was just so clear and so powerful,” Legend told Howe. “I would love to work with you and help you make the most of the amazing voice that you have.”

Shelton immediately disagreed with Legend’s take on Howe's vocals. “I don’t think you should wimp out like he’s suggesting that you do and not get better,” he said. “That’s the whole point of getting on this show, is to get over that hump.”

In the end, Howe was swayed by his Cali connection with Stefani (Shelton’s wife), choosing the “Orange County Girl” to be his coach.

“See John, your insistence to fight with me derailed both of us,” Shelton said. “Stop trying to argue with me.”

Gwen Stefani loses Utah songwriter to Camila Cabello

Utah singer-songwriter Sydney Kronmiller blew away Stefani and new coach Camila Cabello with her distinct tone and tender performance of “Latch” by Disclosure and Sam Smith, earning a chair turn from both coaches.

“I love somebody that is a songwriter (who) has that really understated, beautiful tone,” Stefani said. “I’m going to see if I can fight (Camila) on this one.”

Cabello gushed over Kronmiller’s acoustic reworking of the techno Sam Smith hit.

“That’s a very vulnerable and intimate choice,” Cabello said. “The version I know is this electronic, Sam Smith-Disclosure version, and this person is stripping it down, and she plays guitar.”

Stefani lost this battle to Cabello, as Kronmiller chose to join Team Camila.

John Legend scores 'formidable' four-chair singer Parijita Bastola

Teen R&B vocalist Parijita Bastola, the first Nepalese American contestant to appear on the show, stunned the coaches with her stirring rendition of Labrinth’s “Jealous,” scoring herself a four-chair turn and standing ovations from Cabello and Legend.

“You’re so in touch with your heart, it’s incredible,” Stefani told Bastola. “You’re so natural and very unique.”

Legend was moved by Bastola’s unwavering heritage and vocal prowess. “The best artists are able to bring the music of their culture and of their roots into the wider global landscape of music,” he said. “Your voice is that kind of transcendent voice, and it would be an honor for me to work with you.”

Bastola ultimately chose the R&B heavyweight as her coach.

“What a magical young lady. It was such a flawless, beautiful performance,” he said. “She is one of our most formidable artists in this competition this season.”
