If you've ever thrown a "get me out of here" glance at your bestie after being (unwillingly) chatted up at a bar, then you're not alone. It's likely we've all been in that scenario at one point or another – and that includes Her Majesty.

But, with all the royal engagements and official visits she carries out, how exactly does the Queen gets out of the conversations she's really not into? Well, wonder no more, as one eagle-eyed TikToker has revealed just that, sharing a clip of the "secret" signal the Monarch uses when she wants out.

"You see how the Queen shifts her handbag from one hand to the next?" the TikToker wrote alongside the video. "It's a signal that she is ready to end her current conversation." As for who the signal is aimed at, the user explains: "The signal is very crucial for [her] aides and security."

Further explaining how the Queen uses her handbag to discretely communicate with her aides, royal expert Hugo Vickers tells British Heritage magazine: "It's all in the bag."

"If the Queen shifts her bag from one hand to the next, it signals that she is ready to end her current conversation," Vickers explains. "As well as this, if those in-the-know see that the Queen has placed her bag on a table, they'll be aware that the Queen is ready to leave an event in the next five minutes."

With the Queen's formerly "secret" signal now being outed, plenty of royal fans commented on the awkward situations this might present. "I’d be crushed if I was talking w[ith] her and she switches the purse," one person commented on the TikTok video. "Imagine the Queen asking secretly to rescued from your conversation," someone else said alongside the face-palm emoji.

But other people took a different view, noting how this is perhaps Her Majesty's way of keeping her royal fans happy. "I think it's kind [of] her to be so subtle and polite about it. Imagine talking to the queen and she just turns and walks away or calls out 'I'm done!'" someone commented under the clip, with another person writing: "Love how she does it all in a very subtle way."

Well, it's safe to say if we ever meet the Queen, we'll be keeping our eyes firmly on her handbag...
