Vin Diesel Breaks Down His 'Last Witch Hunter' Trailer, Promises He Doesn't Fight Groot

The first thing that Vin Diesel remembers about the production of his upcoming fantasy action flick, The Last Witch Hunter, is that it made him sneeze.

“This was a very interesting moment, because we were shooting in the fields, and they wanted a particle effect,” Diesel tells Yahoo Movies in the video above, which features the actor’s running commentary on the film’s first full trailer. “And at the end of the day, everyone was sneezing. And then we realized what we were using was big bags of pollen.” (You can watch the full trailer without commentary below.)

The film features Diesel as the immortal Kaulder, the titular hunter of witches who, as Michael Caine’s priest character puts it, “tasted more of life” than anyone in history. He’s so old, in fact, he was alive when long beard braids and flowing Mohawks were in style. Because of this longevity, he’s experienced great joys, but suffered even greater losses, leaving him a (now-bald) man focused on his work…which is no less than saving human civilization from underworld menaces.

Kaulder may be the greatest warrior of the mysterious group Axe and the Cross, but this time around, he needs some help. So he enlists a wide-eyed young priest named Dolan Thirty-Seven (Elijah Wood, who has some experience with mythical battles).

Diesel’s OG witch hunter also teams up with a “Dream Walker” named Chloe, (Game of Thrones’s Rose Leslie). She sends him to a dangerous and fantastical spirit realm where he is not so immortal. There he takes on, among other creatures, a monster that looks a bit like a walking tree.

But don’t worry: “That’s not Groot, guys!” Vin assures us.

Diesel also says that there’s already a sequel in the works, called The Axe and Cross. The Last Witch Hunter, directed by Breck Eisner, hits theaters on Oct. 23.
