Viking Polaris Passengers Share Video After Deadly 'Rogue Wave' Smashes Cruise Ship

A passenger on board a Viking cruise ship hit by a ‘rogue wave’ which killed one person and left four more injured, on November 29, has shared video from the trip.

Debbie Terry and her wife Tamarah Castaneda were on the Viking Polaris as part of an expedition to Antarctica.

The Norwegian-flagged ship was caught in a storm as it sailed back towards Ushuaia, Argentina.

Media citing Argentine authorities reported the victim was a 62-year-old US woman who was hit by broken glass when the wave broke cabin windows during the storm.

Media citing Viking reported the company was investigating the incident and offered its “deepest sympathies” to the passenger’s family. Viking described it a “rogue wave incident” and said the four other passengers’ injuries were non-life threatening, media said.

“Our focus remains on the safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew, and we are working directly with them to arrange return travel,” Viking stated, according to media.

On a Facebook post, Terry wrote, “Our room was on the third floor and the waves were crashing our our window. There is a metal shade over the window that closes. I thought it was to darken the room because it stays light about 20 hours a day…) After the JOLT we were wide awake and then the Captain announced a CODE DELTA – THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”
