    The battle for consumer attention in China's electric car market is being fought over touches of "tech luxury" that car buyers in other markets have never seen. China’s upstart electric brands, and even its state-owned, legacy automakers, are racing to pack technology and features once considered premium into EVs as cheap as $20,000 – less than half the cost of an average new car in the United States, now more than $48,000. That represents a deepening challenge to foreign brands in China, including Tesla and Volkswagen, which both have top-selling EVs in the world’s largest market, and others, analysts say.

  • Yellen says range of options to deal with frozen Russian assets

    U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Thursday the outright seizure of Russian assets is justifiable but is only one possibility, with assets instead able to serve as collateral for borrowing in the market to help Ukraine. The European Union has agreed to segregate that interest and essentially move forward on a program in which it can be transferred to Ukraine.

    Construction machinery manufacturer Caterpillar (CAT) saw a mixed bag of first-quarter earnings results, falling short of revenue estimates ($14.96 billion compared to an expected $15.13 billion) but topping adjusted earnings per share outlook ($5.60 compared to an expected $5.13). Caterpillar shares are in turn falling Thursday morning, though it has been on a run year-to-date in 2024.     Hess Corp on Thursday reported first-quarter earnings well above analysts' forecasts, driven by a 28% increase in Guyana oil output, a sign Exxon Mobil's results out Friday could also top forecasts. Last October, Hess agreed to sell itself to Chevron for $53 billion in stock, but the deal has been stalled by a regulatory review and challenged by Exxon, which claims a right to Hess's Guyana assets.
