In some cases, stepping into the family business can seriously pay off. For the veteran-owned brand Mutt’s Sauce, updating a secret family recipe was the ingredient for a booming business.

“Imagine being on active duty, and you learn that you inherit the only copy of this recipe with no instructions,” owner Charlynda Scales tells In The Know.

After following her grandfather’s footsteps in service, she recreated his original recipe. With an update to the Original Mutt’s Sauce, Scales added Ghost Pepper and Sweet and Spicy. Not to mention, there’s also a gluten-free version of the OG Mutt’s sauce.

The veteran-owned brand now has deluxe spices

Mutt’s Sauce makes a great addition to stir-fry, steak sauce dinners and even morning eggs. However, the brand has expanded its family sauce into powdery spices. In a pack of three, foodies can nab the Opinion Pepper, the Berbere Spice Blend and Garlic Ghost Pepper.

Berbere is an ingredient that you’ll find in Ethiopian and Eritrean dishes, per the brand’s site. Plus, you can mix this spice with your favorite Mutt’s Sauce flavor to really give it an extra kick. If you have a crockpot lying around, the Onion Pepper is perfect for dousing your one-pot meals in. Mix it with the Original Mutt’s Sauce, and it turns up the spice level even more.

Though the Ghost Pepper Sauce (and all of the other Mutt’s Sauce flavors) is mild, Garlic Ghost Pepper is a different story. Described as “the most savory feeling of pain you will ever experience” on its website, you can read the heat level of this bad boy.

If your dishes seem slightly bland as of late, this Black-owned brand will easily turn up the heat in your kitchen.
