All-vegan fast food restaurant Burger Patch closes its East Sacramento, Davis locations

Vegan fast food favorite Burger Patch closed two out of its three remaining restaurants Friday.

The plant-based eatery closed locations at 1420 65th St., Suite 107, in East Sacramento and 500 1st St., Suite 9 in Davis, it announced in an email to devotees Friday morning.

Burger Patch closed its Land Park storefront in January as well, though that space still houses its test kitchen and offices. Owners Phil and Danea Horn still have their midtown Sacramento location at 2301 K St., Suite 101, which opened to long lines in 2019.

Both the Land Park and East Sacramento restaurants had fewer sit-down customers than expected, Phil Horn said. About 70% of orders from the East Sacramento store were for either delivery or pickup, and Burger Patch figured they could still serve those people from the midtown location, a smaller space with no indoor seating.

“The migration of how people order and dine has been so strong off-premise that delivery has become a big part of our business, and our delivery radius has been expanded,” Horn said.

The Horns had a particular attachment to Davis, given that Danea earned her . doctorate in agriculture and resource economics from the university. But the transient student population left the restaurant near campus empty on holiday breaks, particularly over the summers, Phil said.

Burger Patch is still looking to expand further from its midtown base, possibly in the Sacramento suburbs or Bay Area. In the meantime, it plans to roll out a to-go concept within the midtown store called Burrito Patch that Phil Horn compared to a vegan, higher-quality Taco Bell.

What to look for: Burger Patch closed its East Sacramento and Davis stores Friday, but still has its original in midtown and may expand further.

Where: The remaining location is at 2301 K St., Suite 101, Sacramento.

Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-midnight Friday and Saturday.

What’s next: Look for Burrito Patch to open out of the midtown Burger Patch within the next couple of months as a to-go-only restaurant. That location will also expand its hours later into the evening and add more breakfast options on weekends.
