Texas shooting: More than US$2 million raised after husband of fallen teacher dies from heart attack

Over US$2 million has been raised on a GoFundMe page for Joe and Irma Garcia, following the deadly shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas.

Irma, a teacher and a mother to four children, was killed when an 18-year-old attacked adults and children at the school this week. Her husband, Joe, tragically passed away just days later.

A message posted online from their nephew states that Joe's death was "due to grief."

"Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers," Debra Austin, Irma's cousin, posted on the GoFundMe page. "I truly believe Joe died of a broken heart and losing the love of his life of more than 25 years was too much to bear."

The online fundraiser far exceeded the US$10,000, with several contributors posting message of support for the Garcia family.

"My heart breaks for your family and all the families involved in this tragic act," one donator wrote. "May you find light and love in your time of grief, until you meet your precious loved ones again."

"I can't imagine losing not just one, but two parents," another donator wrote online. "I hope all of this money goes straight to the children to help with expenses and their future."

"But no amount of money can help the trauma inflicted onto them. I hope the community and surviving family members let the children lean on them for anything moving forward."

"No family should ever have to bear such tragedy," a third person wrote in a message on the GoFundMe page. "I know money will not bring them back, but I hope their 4 children know they have a community behind them."
