Doctors must be accountable for failures in killer’s care, victim’s family say
Doctors must be held responsible for their “failure” to treat Nottingham triple killer Valdo Calocane appropriately, the family of one of his victims have said. Dr Sanjoy Kumar, the father of Grace O’Malley Kumar, told a press conference he would be writing to Health Secretary Wes Streeting to order the mental health trust in question to hold individual clinicians “responsible”, adding: “We demand accountability.” His words follow those of the mother of Barnaby Webber, Emma Webber, who told the PA news agency that a report into Calocane’s care is a “horror show” that showed mental health teams “missed opportunities because “they just didn’t do their jobs properly”.

'He got away with murder': Families of Nottingham attack victims react to review into killer
The families of the Nottingham victims have said the attacker "got away with murder" after an independent review found failings involved in his prior NHS care. Valdo Calocane was allowed to avoid taking long-lasting antipsychotic medication because he did not like needles, the 300-page report found. Calocane, who had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after killing 19-year-old students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates, before attempting to kill three other people in June 2023.

Analysis-Europe steps out from US shadow in 2025, but for how long
European stocks have staged their best performance in a decade against Wall Street in the first six weeks of 2025, but hopes among some they can finally end years of underperformance could yet be dashed by long-standing structural challenges. Fund inflows into European stocks reached their second-highest in 25 years in January and major benchmarks continue to hit record highs, beating their U.S. counterparts, as investors look for the region's stars to finally align. And the recent rout in stocks of Wall Street's artificial intelligence megacaps on the emergence of cheaper Chinese rivals suggests market leadership could expand to neglected sectors, in which Europe is particularly strong.

Syria's Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said on Wednesday the group had not received any plans from the U.S. forces in northern and eastern Syria to withdraw. Women prisoners banned from putting dirty underwear in washing machines as lack of 'basic care' driving self-harm, inspectors say
Female prisons have a self-harm rate 8.5 times higher than male jails, as women experience a lack of "basic care" - including a "bizarre rule" that bans them from putting dirty underwear in washing machines. In a report published following a review of four female jails, chief prisons inspector Charlie Taylor said this lack of "basic care" is causing such distress that inmates are resorting to harming themselves. None of the prisons allowed women to wash their dirty underwear in a machine - instead they had to wash it by hand in a small bowl in their cell.
