USA TODAY's new book club: Why we want to read Stephen King's 'Fairy Tale' with you

The only thing better than getting sucked into a good book is sharing that book with others. Handing over a dog-eared paperback to a friend, gushing about shocking plot twists over coffee, sharing a hankie over tear-jerker endings – good stories are made better with sharing.

That’s why we’re launching the USA TODAY Book Club as part of our commitment to help you find the good stuff on crowded shelves and continue the conversation after the final page has been turned.

Every month, we’ll pick a newly released book we love – could be a page-turning novel with a delicious plot, a particularly revealing celebrity memoir or a pop cultural deep dive – that we’re dying to share with you. Our picks will run the gamut from blockbuster bestsellers by beloved authors to debut novels by newcomers everyone should know.

But what they’ll all have in common is that we couldn’t put them down – and couldn’t wait to share them with you.

Our first pick is a no-brainer for spooky season: Stephen King’s new best selling novel, “Fairy Tale.” The horror maestro has put his own signature on the fantastical genre in a coming-of-age tale that references everything from “Rumpelstiltskin” and “Three Little Pigs” to “Star Wars” and “Hunger Games.” And of course, this being King, there are man-eating giants and electric zombies.

Review: Stephen King weaves a profound 'Fairy Tale' filled with heart (and, yes, some horror)

The book became an instant bestseller upon its September release, hitting No. 1 on USA TODAY’S Best Selling Books list. It became King’s 26th novel to claim the top spot and 82nd book to appear on the list.

Our resident King aficionado and film critic Brian Truitt loves the book. In a ★★★½ (out of four) review, Truitt writes, “After turning that last page, you’ll feel a little stronger in spirit, yearn for another story and, dare we say, maybe even live happily ever after."

Join us for a Twitter Spaces conversation on Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. ET when host Truitt will be joined by special guests Richard Chizmar, who co-wrote King's "Gwendy's Button Box" books, "Dorothy Must Die" author Danielle Paige, and The KingCast podcast hosts Scott Wampler and Eric Vespe.
