Upscale retailer closing after more than a decade in Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza

Kate Spade New York is closing its Country Club Plaza store after more than a decade.

The shop opened in the 1,490-square-foot space at 321 Nichols Road in late October 2011, next to Michael Kors. It sells handbags, wallets, shoes, clothing, jewelry, accessories, gifts and home accessories.

The store is scheduled to close Jan. 23, and the company is directing customers to its online store, katespade.com, as well as to its outlet store in the Legends Outlets Kansas City in Kansas City, Kansas.

Its products also are sold at Von Maur in Corbin Park and in Nordstrom at Oak Park Mall, both in Overland Park.

Corporate officials did not say why the Plaza store is closing. Plaza officials couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday.

The brand began when Kansas City-born designer Kate Brosnahan Spade created a sleek handbag that became a phenomenon in the fashion industry. The Neiman Marcus Group bought a controlling stake of the company in 1999. The company was sold in 2006 to the Liz Claiborne Co. for $124 million. Coach then bought it for $2.4 billion. Coach and Kate Spade are now part of Tapestry Inc.

Spade died by suicide in 2018.
