University of Missouri suspends frat events after student hospitalized for alcohol

The University of Missouri has temporarily suspended all fraternity activities after a freshman was hospitalized as a result of too much alcohol consumption during a party, university officials said in a statement.

Police were called to the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house early Wednesday after the student became unresponsive, according to a university news release. The student was taken to University Hospital for treatment.

The incident is being investigated by the university’s police force and the student support and accountability office. Initial findings show several of the fraternity members “consumed significant amounts of alcohol” during the party, the university’s statement said.

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Bill Stackman said the events at the Phi Gamma Delta house had caused extreme concern.

“As part of the investigations, we will hold anyone accountable who is found to have willfully ignored or violated university regulations,” Stackman said in the statement. “Those individuals could also face criminal charges.”

The suspension of fraternity activities includes all social events and activities sanctioned by the university. The decision to issue the suspension was made alongside the university’s Interfraternity Council, a student-led collective of Greek organizations, which is also helping with the university’s investigation.

“We stand in agreement with the actions being taken by the university as nothing is more important than the safety of the Mizzou community,” said Conner Sibley, the organization’s president and a senior at the university.

The area chapter of Phi Gamma Delta has been suspended by the university and its national organization, according to the news release.
