North Carolina faces Notre Dame for the third straight season and is looking for its first win in the series since 2008. The Fighting Irish (1-2) enter Kenan Stadium trying to get back to .500 under first-year coach Marcus Freeman after losing at Ohio State and being upset at home against Marshall.

The Tar Heels (3-0) had last week off after beating Georgia State on Sept. 10 and could secure their first 4-0 start since 1997, which was the last year of coach Mack Brown’s first tenure at UNC. Antoine Green caught a 64-yard touchdown, his second score on just two receptions in the game.

Hampton TD catch: UNC 26, Notre Dame 45, 4Q

Omarion Hampton caught his first touchdown pass of the season for a 4-yard score. The two-point conversion again failed in a pass to Nesbit.

Tyree TD run: Notre Dame 45, UNC 20, 4Q

Chris Tyree scored on a 1-yard touchdown run set up with the help of a pair of late hit penalties and a pass interference against the Heels.

Green TD catch: UNC 20, Notre Dame 38, 3Q

Receiver Antoine Green, making his first appearance of the season after suffering a shoulder injury last month, made a splash on his first catch of the season. Green hauled in an 80-yard bomb for a score to keep a glimmer of hope for the Heels. The two-point conversion play failed when Maye’s pass to tight end Bryson Nesbit was a bit too high.

Carolina appeared to get a fourth down stop on the third, but linebacker Cedric Gray was called for a pass interference. The penalty set off UNC coach Mack Brown when the replay showed over the big screen. Brown got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty protesting the call. Estime scored on a 1-yard run.

Diggs TD catch: Notre Dame 31, UNC 14, 3Q

Halftime didn’t disrupt Notre Dame’s offensive momentum. The Irish have scored on five consecutive drives including the opening possession of the second half when Pyne threw to a wide-open Diggs for a 29-yard score.

Carolina’s defense held on a third down and 6 from their own 26 to force a second field goal attempt. This time Blake Grupe made good on a 40-yard attempt with 23 seconds left in the first half.

Estime TD run: Notre Dame 21, UNC 14, 2Q

The Irish marched down the field with plays of 13, 19, 17 and 19 before Estime’s 2-yard touchdown run. Notre Dame is up to 109 rushing yards after gaining just 13 in the first quarter.

Downs TD catch: UNC 14, Notre Dame 14, 2Q

Carolina’s offense responded after its last 11 plays netted just 11 yards on three straight drives. The key play on the drive was Maye’s 43-yard completion to J.J. Jones. Downs finished the drive off with a 3-yard touchdown catch on third down.

Styles TD catch: Notre Dame 14, UNC 7 2Q

Audric Estime popped a 29-yard run up the middle of the line. Drew Pyne then connected with Lorenzo Styles who beat double coverage for a 40-yard score. Carolina has now allowed three plays of more than 25 yards on their last two drives.

Mayer TD catch: Notre Dame 7, UNC 7, 2Q

Michael Mayer scored on a 10-yard reception to cap off an eight play, 83-yard drive. The key play came when quarterback Drew Pyne connected with running back Logan Diggs for a 34-yard gain on the first play of the second quarter.

The Irish took over at the UNC 43 thanks to a 17-yard punt return by Brandon Joseph. But a Power Echols sack helped thwart their drive. The Irish settled for a 44-yard field goal attempt by Blake Grupe, but he pulled it wide right.

Downs TD catch: UNC 7, Notre Dame 0, 1Q

Carolina took its opening drive in for a touchdown powered by a 28-yard strike from quarterback Drake Maye to J.J. Jones on the opening play. UNC coach Mack Brown opted not to kick a field goal facing a fourth and goal from the ND 4. Josh Downs, in his first game back since suffering a knee injury in the opener, caught a 4-yard pass in the back of the end zone for a score.
