UK Covid LIVE: More vaccine clinics in hotspots as fears grow over Indian variant, but no vaccines for all aged over 18
More vaccination clinics are being rolled out in a covid hotspot in response to a rise in cases of the Indian coronavirus variant, but all over 18s wont be offered the jab.
Blackburn and Darwen Council will open more clinics - but despite earlier reports suggesting all over 18s would be offered the jab, it has said it will be sticking to Government guidelines on who should get the jabs, currently at age 38 and over.
Blackburn is one of a handful of areas that is experiencing a jump in cases, while large parts of England have seen significant drops.
Boris Johnson has admitted a rise in Indian variant cases is concerning but has said that the road map out of lockdown is likely to go ahead as planned.
The government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) committee is holding an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the rapid spread of the Indian variant in the UK.
George Eustice, the Environment Secretary, admitted there were local hotspots of the variant in the UK and did not rule out local lockdowns.
