While summer is most certainly over in the UK, we can still remain hopeful for some sunny days and spells of warm weather in September and the remainder of autumn.

Many pubs and restaurants are fortunate to have always had outdoor seating areas – while others adopted theirs more recently – either way, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal al fresco. Those feeling the chill in the air a little more need not worry, as most of these spots are well tuned in and have heaters, blankets, cushions - you name it.

Whether you’re looking for a fun rooftop atmosphere or a quaint pub garden, there are many ways to relax and enjoy good food and drink in the post-summer sunshine.

From bustling eateries in the capital to more quaint quiet spots across the UK, we’ve got you and your stomachs covered.

Best restaurants to dine outdoors in autumn 2022

French-founded Mama Shelter's London location is the perfect place to spend an autumn's day or evening. With its ethereal garden bar open for food and drinks, guests can enjoy some of the Havana rum cocktails from the seasonal pop-up, as well as dishes including confit salmon spring roll, Mama Lisbon's peri-peri chicken burger and the slow-cooked pork belly. Vegans, fear not - there's a plant-based cottage pie and pea and shallot tortellini with vegan feta on the menu - and those with a sweet tooth should try the baked cookie for dessert.

Co-founded by Simon King (ex-Ramsay and The Fat Duck) and Matt Larcombe (ex-Heston), The Victoria champions elevated classic pub dishes with a creative twist. Enjoy salt chamber-aged beef tartare with horseradish and hen egg, as well as mushroom parfait to start with, followed by a traditional pub grub dish of fish and chips, or a wagyu bavette if you're feeling something finer. All washed down with a decent wine and craft beer list.

El Norte, London

The Spanish sister restaurant to eateries Zuaya and Como Garden in Kensington, El Norte brings traditional flavours from Spain with an added twist to Mayfair. Start off your meal with the ham croquettes and immediately order the goats cheese, pistachio and honey ones because they're that good. The truffle and manchego cheese tortilla is worthier than most dishes we've tried so definitely savour this one. We're not sure exactly how well the sweet tomato sauce complements the tuna tartare but the fish itself was excellent, as was the red prawn tartare. Save some space for your mains because not much will prepare you for the glazed Iberican pork, the grilled octopus in pepper sauce and when is it ever acceptable to not order ox cheek from the menu? Especially when El Norte's is slow cooked in red wine and served with vanilla mash potato. The sautéed mushrooms with poached egg is an excelled side dish and if you somehow have room for dessert, the truffle, honey and manchego cheesecake is not to be missed.

Gold, Notting Hill, London

On the doorstep of Portobello Road, Gold's small but ambient terrace acts as a tranquil oasis from the bustling market crowds, and its menu is even more impressive. Featuring octopus carpaccio, porchetta with black Iberiko tomatoes and chargrilled sprouting broccoli, to name a few dishes, it's the perfect spot to enjoy a selection of small plates over a glass of wine for lunch or dinner. Larger plates include lamb gigot with Datterini tomatoes and nettle ravioli.

Lochleven Seafood Cafe, Fort William, Scotland

A hidden gem you could quite literally drive past without realising, Lochleven Seafood Cafe is a small restaurant and seafood shop on the west coast of Scotland. Serving freshly-caught, delicious seafood – we recommend the scallops, mussels, clams and lobster – you can sit on the terrace and enjoy breathtaking views of Loch Leven. A no-frills sort of place but well worth the visit.

Smokestak, Shoreditch, London

This American-style barbecue restaurant remains a long-term favourite spot to grab a bite in Shoreditch. While its brisket buns and ox cheek croquettes remain as signature dishes, the other smoked meats such as pork belly ribs and lamb merguez are also strong contenders. Also not to be underestimated: the jacket potato with mustard rarebit (though we mourn the mushrooms on toast, still). The sticky toffee pudding, while not always an ideal dessert on a hot day, is worth starting an argument over if your dinner partner declines.

Inspired by the Head Chef's travels across Europe and the Mediterranean, these influences can be seen across the menu via dishes such as cuttlefish croquettes, the lamb neck with burnt aubergine and courgette spaghetti with pistachios. Diners best keep their eyes peeled for the specials which have past included succulent and so tasty veal chops.
