EXCLUSIVE: The In-Between: Unforgettable Encounters During Life’s Final Moments, a book about death, written by hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos is set to be turned into a scripted series.

UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, has landed the rights to the project in a competitive situation.

In The In-Between, Vlahos recounts the most impactful experiences she’s had with the people she’s worked with—from the woman who never once questioned her faith until she was close to death, to the older man seeing visions of his late daughter, to the young patient who laments that she spent too much of her short life worrying about what others thought of her—while also sharing her own fascinating journey.

There’s no writer yet attached but Vlahos will serve as an exec producer on the series.

The book was published by Ballantine/Penguin Random House in June 2023 and landed on the New York Times bestseller list where it has resided for 14 weeks.

“The patients I’ve cared for have changed my life in such a profound way. They’ve shown me the beauty in end-of-life care, given me life-changing advice, and taught me to not fear death,” said Vlahos. “I feel that my patients are living on through everyone hearing their stories and I am thrilled about the opportunity to share those stories on a different platform to reach even more people. I love my patients; their stories being told with dignity and respect was of the upmost importance to me when choosing a home for them. I am so excited that UCP is that home.”

“Hadley has taken the fear out of the traditionally taboo subject of dying by teaching us to live through her patients’ stories of joy, reconciliation and redemption,” added Beatrice Springborn, President, UCP & Universal International Studios.  “We’re thrilled and honored to bring her and her patients’ stories to life.”

Vlahos is repped by Verve, which brokered the deal.
