Two Muschamp USC assistant coaches joining Saban’s staff at Alabama, reports say

Will Muschamp won a national championship with Georgia. Now, two other former South Carolina assistant coaches are joining the national runners-up.

Travaris Robinson will be the next Alabama defensive backs coach, according to reports Wednesday evening, while Coleman Hutzler will join Nick Saban’s staff in some capacity. InsideTheU and The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman were among the first to report Robinson’s news, while On3Sports reported Hutzler to the Tide.

Robinson worked at Miami last year, but before that he was the Gamecocks’ defensive coordinator under Muschamp. Robinson was one of Muschamp’s first hires in Columbia and served as USC’s defensive backs coach from 2016-10. He wasn’t retained by new coach Shane Beamer.

Before arriving at USC, Robinson had also coached defensive backs under Muschamp at both Florida (2011-14) and Auburn (2015).

Hutzler was USC’s linebackers and special teams coordinator for five years before leaving in 2020 to take a job at Texas. He spent last season at Ole Miss as assistant coach and special teams coordinator. His role at Alabama wasn’t known as of Wednesday, according to FootballScoop.

Muschamp, who was fired from South Carolina during 2020 season, started 2021 as analyst at Georgia before moving to special teams coordinator. Next season, Muschamp will be the Bulldogs’ co-defensive coordinator after Dan Lanning left to become Oregon’s head coach.

Other former Muschamp assistants also are going to be in new places next year.

Former offensive coordinator Bryant McClendon is going with Mario Cristobal from Oregon to Miami. Former USC running backs coach Des Kitchings is joining Tony Elliott’s staff at Virginia as offensive coordinator.
