Two more members of NC’s congressional delegation back Beasley in 2022 Senate race

Two longtime Democratic members of North Carolina’s congressional delegation are backing Cheri Beasley in her U.S. Senate bid.

U.S. Reps. G.K. Butterfield and David Price announced their endorsement of Beasley on Thursday morning. Beasley, the former chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, and state Sen. Jeff Jackson are the top contenders in the Democratic primary.

They are running to replace retiring Republican Sen. Richard Burr. The primary election, originally scheduled for March 8, was delayed until May 17 on Wednesday evening by the state Supreme Court. The deadline for candidates to file for office was suspended.

“Cheri Beasley is a true public servant and leader who always puts the people first. She possesses the character and temperament to fight for North Carolina and its values in the United States Senate,” Butterfield said in a statement.

Said Price: “North Carolinians need a champion in the Senate, fighting for them every day, and Cheri Beasley is the best candidate for the job.”

Butterfield, from Wilson, and Price, from Chapel Hill, are retiring at the end of their current terms. Butterfield, who served on the North Carolina Supreme Court for about two years in the early 2000s, has been in Congress since 2004. Price has been in Congress since 1987 save for one term in the mid-1990s.

“I am honored to have the support of two leaders who have spent their lives in service to our beloved state,” Beasley said in a statement.

She was previously endorsed by U.S. Rep. Alma Adams of Charlotte and former state Sen. Erica Smith, who withdrew from the Senate race last month to run for House to replace Butterfield. Early in her campaign, Beasley announced the endorsements of nearly 70 North Carolina leaders, a list that has grown to over 200, her campaign said.

Cheri Beasley, the former chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, will report raising more than any other Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate during the third quarter.
