Xcel Energy posted a better-than-expected first-quarter profit on Thursday, even as the electric and natural gas utility faced growing liabilities tied to the largest wildfire in Texas history. Xcel faces 15 lawsuits in connection with the Texas Smokehouse Creek blaze, which burned more than 1 million acres in the Lone Star state this year, with at least two of the complaints claiming the utility was negligent in maintaining electrical infrastructure that led to the fire.
