Yahoo Movies Tuesday’s Boys HS Rewind: No. 2 Myers Park, No. 7 Cannon win league titles
News and notes from the next to last big night of regular-season games.
▪ Ardrey Kell outscored Olympic 22-9 in the fourth quarter to upset the Trojans 50-42. Olympic (20-2) is No. 6 in The Observer’s Sweet 16. Caden Caskey led the Knights with 19 points.
▪ Cannon School got 19 points from Austin Swart, 18 from Sean Birmingham and 17 from Isaiah Henry in a 66-61 win over Providence Day that locked up the CISAA conference title.
▪ No. 2 Myers Park got 20 points from Bishop Boswell in an 82-38 win over South Mecklenburg. The Mustangs won the SoMECK conference championship with the win. Myers Park had not won a league title since the 2008-09 season.
▪ No. 15 East Meck got 22 points from Jonah Lawrence and Jordon Nevill and beat Charlotte Catholic 65-54. Catholic (19-5, 10-2) is done with league play. East Meck (18-5, 9-2) can tie for the Southwestern 4A title by winning at Providence Friday.

Caden Caskey, Ardrey Kell: game-high 19 points in a 50-42 win over No. 6 Olympic. Olympic was trying to win to set up a conference championship game at home against Myers Park Friday.
Maurio Hanson, Chambers: 15 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and three assists in a 65-62 win over West Charlotte.
Jonah Lawrence, Jordon Nevill, East Meck: combined for 44 points in a 65-54 win over Charlotte Catholic.
Mason Mitchell, Rock Hill Northwestern: 18 points in a 71-69 win over South Pointe. He made 4-of-4 3-point shots and had four rebounds, three assists.
Callum Richard, Gaston Day: game-high 27 points in a 69-60 win over Westminster Catawba.

Myers Park retires Haywoode Workman’s jersey
Tuesday night, during its basketball game with rival South Mecklenburg, Myers Park retired the jersey of one of its all-time greats.
Haywoode Workman, now 56, was a three-sport star at Myers Park in the ‘80s. He was named Mecklenburg County player of the year by The Observer as a high school senior. He was also named football player of the year by the old Charlotte News that same season,w hen he played quarterback for the Mustangs.
In three years on Myers Park’s basketball team, Workman’s teams won 59 of 74 games.
Workman’s jersey will be retired at halftime Tuesday.
Workman, who is expected to attend Tuesday’s game, started his college basketball career at Division II Winston-Salem State during the 1984-85 school year. Workman started at point guard for a Rams team that finished 16-12 but upset No. 1 ranked and then 30-0 Virginia Union in an NCAA Division II tournament first round game. Union’s star player was a future NBA forward named Charles Oakley.
Workman left Winston-Salem State after one year and transferred to Oral Roberts. After sitting out one season, due to NCAA rules, Workman averaged 13.8, 19.4 and 19.9 points over the next three years. He left school at No. 4 on Oral Robert’s all-time scoring list with 1,507 points.
Seen as a long shot for the NBA draft, Workman was picked No. 49 (No. 22 in the second round) by Atlanta in 1989. He played 359 games in eight NBA seasons from 1989-2000 and he played in 41 playoff games.
After his playing career, Workman got into officiating and eventually became an NBA official in the 2008-09 season, a position he still holds.
