Try TikTok’s DIY Hair Measurement Hack Before Your Next Chop

Summer is the perfect season to change up your look and cut your hair. There are plenty of short styles to choose from if you're looking for a change, such as pixie, mullet or bob haircuts.

However, parting ways with your tresses, especially if you've never had a big chop before, can be quite daunting. First, you could opt for bangs, such as the trendy butterfly haircut, to see if you like it, but sometimes it's better to dive right in. It's just hair, and it will always grow back.

Not ready to commit just yet? Try tucking your hair underneath a wig of a similar length you'd like to try or ask your stylist to slay you with a short-styled quick-weave for a test drive.

If those options don't work for you, TikToker Bondenavant has a measurement trick that may be the perfect answer to your burning question: Will it look good on me? In the video, she explains that all you need to determine if short hair will look good on you is two pencils and measurement tape. For this method, you'll start by placing one pencil horizontally under your chin, and the second is placed vertically at the base of your ear, creating an angle between the two pencils. You will want to measure the distance between the bottom of your ear to the corner where the pencils meet. "If the distance is longer than 2.25 inches, then longer hair looks good on you," Bondenavant advises. If the measurement falls exactly on 2.25 inches, you'll be set to go with short hair and can try any style.

While there is no real theory behind Bondenavant's math, it is certain that the length and angle of your jaw make the biggest difference.
