Trustee remuneration policy adopted

After public consultation, the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public Schools board of education has adopted a new trustee remuneration policy.

With the new policy, remuneration will be set using the average pay of similar-sized districts as of the spring prior to a trustee election. Also, on July 1 of each year, an increase based on the June Consumer Price Index would be applied. Following the 2022 election, remuneration will be around $26,287 for the chair, $24,732 for the vice-chair and $23,400 for trustees, according to the district finance department. Currently, the board chair receives $21,329 annually and the vice-chair and trustees $19,329 each.

Some of the correspondence from individuals indicated surprise to see child care coverage, up to $50 a day, for trustees who attend a convention, conference or seminar. Some also raised concern that, under trustee personal development, a set amount was not delineated for trustees to participate in “personal development in the area of education,” but rather “sufficient funds.”

No changes were made to the policy following the consultation period.

Trustee Lisa Marie Barron suggested offering educational opportunities to the public that outline the work of trustees to provide context with regard to remuneration. “I definitely respect and appreciate the comments that were made.”
