David Ochoa made three saves for his first MLS shutout and Real Salt Lake played Nashville to a scoreless draw Saturday night. All of Ochoa’s saves for Real Salt Lake (2-1-1) came after the 69th minute, including stopping Randall Leal's shot for the second time in the match in the 81st minute. Nashville (1-0-4) improved its unbeaten streak to five matches to start the season and extended its defensive scoreless streak to 318 minutes after its third straight shutout.
HOUSTON (AP) — A tiger that frightened residents after it was last seen briefly wandering around a Houston neighborhood has been found and appears to be unharmed, police announced Saturday evening. In a short video tweeted by Houston police, Cmdr. Ron Borza can be seen sitting next to the tiger, petting the animal and saying it has been a long week searching for it. “But we got him and he’s healthy,” Borza said as the wife of the man police allege is the animal's owner sat next to him and fed the tiger with a baby bottle. The tiger was being held at BARC, the city of Houston’s animal shelter, but was expected to be taken Sunday morning to the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, an animal sanctuary in Murchison, Texas, located southeast of Dallas. Authorities had been searching for the tiger, a 9-month-old male named India, since it was spotted Sunday in a west Houston neighborhood. At the time, it was nearly shot by an off-duty deputy before being whisked away in a car by Victor Hugo Cuevas, who police allege is the owner. At a news conference later Saturday evening, Borza said that Cuevas' wife, Giorgiana, turned over the tiger to police on Saturday after a friend of hers reached out to officials at BARC. “It is Victor’s tiger. That’s what I was told by (Giorgiana Cuevas) ... She says they’ve had that animal for nine months," Borza said. He alleged that the tiger was passed around to different people but that Cuevas' wife knew where the tiger was at all times this week as authorities searched for it. Police are still trying to determine where exactly the tiger was held this week and if any charges related to having the tiger will be filed. Tigers are not allowed within Houston city limits under a city ordinance unless the handler, such as a zoo, is licensed to have exotic animals. But Cuevas’ attorney, Michael W. Elliott, on Saturday night continued to insist his client doesn’t own the tiger, saying, “I am not sure it makes any difference who technically owns India as he does not have a birth certificate or title." “Victor was not the primary owner of India nor did India stay with him the majority of the time," Elliott told The Associated Press. “Victor was however involved in the caretaking of India often. Victor loves India as anyone else would love a favorite pet ... He treated India with love and fantastic treatment in all respects." Cuevas was arrested Monday by Houston police and charged with evading arrest for allegedly fleeing his home with the tiger after officers had responded to a call about a dangerous animal. At the time of his arrest by Houston police, Cuevas was already out on bond for a murder charge in a 2017 fatal shooting in neighboring Fort Bend County. Cuevas has maintained the shooting was self-defense, Elliott said. Cuevas was released on a separate bond for the evading arrest charge on Wednesday. But prosecutors in Fort Bend County then sought to have him held with no bond on the murder charge. After an all-day hearing on Friday, a judge revoked Cuevas’ current $125,000 bond on the murder charge and issued a new bond for $300,000. He remains jailed. During Friday’s court hearing, Waller County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Wes Manion, who lives in the Houston neighborhood where the tiger was seen, testified he interacted with the animal for about 10 minutes to make sure it didn’t go after someone else. He said Cuevas came out of his house yelling, “Don’t kill it,” grabbed the tiger by the collar and kissed its head before leading it back inside his home. Various videos of the tiger's encounter with Manion were posted on social media. Elliott has said Cuevas did nothing illegal because Texas has no statewide law forbidding private ownership of tigers and other exotic animals. Borza said that an exotic animal like a tiger should never be kept in a home. While India seemed domesticated, the tiger already weighs 175 pounds (79 kg), it can “do a lot of damage" and will only get bigger, he said. “He will be going to a sanctuary ... where hopefully he’ll live the rest of his life in a very safe environment," Borza said. __ Follow Juan A. Eduardo Escobar hit a three-run homer, a two-run homer and tied a career high with seven RBIs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Washington Nationals 11-4 on Saturday night. Escobar broke the game open in the fourth when he launched a full-count, two-out pitch from Joe Ross deep into the right field seats that made it 6-2. The homers were Escobar's eighth and ninth of the season.
Firefighters put out a blaze early on Sunday at one of the Philippines' largest hospitals that had prompted the evacuation of dozens of patients from the facility, which also treats coronavirus sufferers. No casualties were reported in the fire at the government-run Philippine General Hospital in the capital, Manila, which was extinguished at dawn. On Twitter, Vice President Leni Robredo made an appeal for "big, industrial fans" to clear the smoke caused by the fire.
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered and five Toronto pitchers combined on a six-hitter to beat Philadelphia 4-0 Saturday night in a game when Phillies star Bryce Harper exited early with right shoulder soreness. Harper was replaced defensively in right field by Scott Kingery to start the bottom of the fourth. Harper struck out in both of his at-bats. The Phillies said Harper is day to day. Guerrero hit his 10th homer, a first-inning solo shot off Aaron Nola (3-3). The drive to right was Guerrero's sixth to the opposite field. Anthony Kay went four innings for the Blue Jays, giving up one hit, two walks and striking out six during a 79-pitch outing. Relievers Travis Bergen (2-0), A.J. Cole, Tyler Chatwood and Jordan Romano helped Toronto pitchers finish with 14 strikeouts. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had an RBI double and Reese McGuire added a run-scoring single as Toronto took a 3-0 lead in the second. Nola allowed three runs and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out nine and walked three. Andrew Knapp pinch-hit for Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto in the eighth. There was no immediate announcement about the substitution. Realmuto left Tuesday's game against Washington after taking a foul ball off his left knee and felt ill with a fever Wednesday night. After not playing Thursday, he was the DH in Friday night's series opener with the Blue Jays. TRAINER’S ROOM Phillies: SS Didi Gregorius (right elbow stiffness) was out of the lineup for the third straight game and said he will undergo additional tests that will likely include a second MRI exam on Monday. Gregorius said there is swelling on the outside of the elbow that limits his swinging a bat. “I am worried because I haven’t been on the field,” said Gregorius, who isn’t sure if he can avoid going on the injured list. … RHP Archie Bradley (left oblique strain) allowed one run and two hits over one inning for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Blue Jays: CF George Springer (quadriceps) continues taking batting practice and is going through his rehab program but there is no date for when he will return. “It’s always tough to tell when it comes to quads,” manager Charlie Montoyo said. UP NEXT Phillies RHP Chase Anderson (2-3) and Toronto LHP Robbie Ray (1-1) are the scheduled starters in the series finale on Sunday. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Mark Didtler, The Associated Press
ATLANTA — CF Montreal suffered a last-second 1-0 defeat at the hands of Atlanta United FC in front of an imposing crowd of 40,116 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday night. It looked like Wilfried Nancy’s men had secured a point in a 0-0 draw when Marcelino Moreno headed a Jake Mulraney cross past Clement Diop in the final seconds of second-half stoppage time. “That’s difficult,” said Nancy. “We felt like we were backing up a little too much. They put a lot of pressure on us.” Mere moments before the game-winning goal, Montreal forward Sunusi Ibrahim was deep in Atlanta's half, tried going around a few defenders before failing to take a shot on goalkeeper Brad Guzan. “What I regret is that final play follows an offensive attempt that we had, on which we could have done better,” said Nancy of Ibrahim's late attempt. “After that, we didn’t manage the play well. We could have fouled or defended slightly better when they had the ball deep. But I’m proud of my players because that wasn’t easy. We played in front of a crowd and against a good team. “I wish we would have conceded a bit earlier, if we had to, instead of conceding at the very end. We have to learn from it.” CF Montreal (2-2-2) was blanked for the third time this season. Playing for the third time in eight days, the CF Montreal players did not see much of the ball and ended the game with 36.8 per cent possession. They nevertheless managed 10 shots, including two on target – the same amount as Atlanta United (2-1-2). Midfielder Samuel Piette felt a 0-0 draw would have been a fair and deserved result. “We worked really hard in a very difficult environment,” he said. “We all worked really hard. Losing a point on that play in the last second really hurts. Overall, we played a good game. Our attitude was good. The guys were tired after the game because they gave it their all.” Montreal won the very first encounter between these two franchises 2-1 on Apr. 15, 2017. Since then, the Canadian club is 0-5-1 against Atlanta United. In Atlanta, that record is 0-4 with two goals scored and nine conceded. Forward Romell Quioto left the game on a stretcher in the 72nd minute of play after suffering an apparent calf injury. The injury occurred moments before Nancy was set to take him out of the game. Montreal’s next contest is against FC Cincinnati on May 22. The visitors were pinned deep in their own half for the first 10 minutes of the match. During that time, Atlanta United created three good scoring chances. Diop was forced to make a save on one of those. By the end of the first half, CF Montreal had managed just one shot on target -- Bjorn Johnsen’s in the 30th minute, which was easily saved by Guzan. It was more of the same in the second half, with Atlanta controlling the play deep in Montreal’s territory. Nancy called upon substitute Ahmed Hamdi in the 65th minute. The Egyptian player nearly gave CF Montreal the lead, but Guzan was up to the task. Officials added four minutes of stoppage time at the end of the game, and the visitors conceded in the dying seconds of that fourth additional minute. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jacob Stallings hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied past the San Francisco Giants 8-6 on Saturday night. The catcher had a two-run double that capped four-run comeback with two out in the seventh that made it 6-all. “It was a crazy game,” Stallings said. “I think that was more pumped up than I usually get, more emotional than I usually get. It was just that kind of game.” Adam Frazier singled to lead off the Pittsburgh ninth and was thrown out at the plate when he tried to score on Bryan Reynolds’ one-out double. Reynolds took third on the play, and trotted home when Stallings sent a drive into the left-field bleachers off Jake McGee (1-1). McGee gave up a game-tying single to Reynolds that sent a 3-2 loss into extras Friday. “I have confidence in everybody in our ’pen,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “That doesn’t mean it’s not a real challenge. ... In these situations, we’re trying to win baseball games. Sometimes you have to call on your best to try to win them.” Stallings hit a wakoff solo shot in a 3-2 win against the Chicago Cubs in an empty PNC Park on Sept. 22 last season. On Saturday, he did it in front of a season-high Pirates crowd of 7,833. “I guess I didn’t think about that, but maybe that added to the emotion,” Stallings said. “Hard to say, but I was definitely more pumped up this time. So maybe that went into it.” Kevin Newman hit an RBI single and another run scored on a wild pitch as the Pirates rallied in the seventh. Pirates closer Richard Rodriguez (2-0) allowed a two-out single to Brandon Crawford in the ninth before getting Mauricio Dubon to pop out. Pittsburgh has won four of seven games since losing eight of its previous nine. The Pirates beat the NL West-leading Giants on Friday night on a walkoff sacrifice by Gregory Polanco in the 11th inning. Pirates manager Derek Shelton was ejected for the first time this season while arguing balls and strikes in the eighth. “Everything is delayed, so the security guys had it first,” Shelton said about watching the walkoff from the clubhouse. “So it was exciting. We don’t have the actual game inside. We have a high home, we have a delay, so the security guys kind of let me know. But credit to our guys. They continued to fight and battle, and it was awesome.” Darin Ruf and Brandon Crawford hit home runs off Tyler Anderson to put the Giants ahead 3-0 in the first. Mike Tauchman hit a two-run homer off reliever Kyle Keller for a 6-2 lead in the sixth. “Obviously, losing some close ones the last few days can get you feeling down,” Ruf said. “But this team has enough veteran leadership to rebound quickly. Looking forward to getting out there tomorrow and hopefully getting some runs on the board, and making some good plays defensively.” Giants starter Johnny Cueto went 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and eight hits. ROSTER MOVE The Pirates optioned RHP Miguel Yajure to Triple-A Indianapolis and recalled Keller from Indianapolis. Yajure one-hit the Giants through five shutout innings in his start Friday, his second in the majors. TRAINER’S ROOM Giants: OF Mike Yastrzemski did not play because of side soreness after colliding with the right-field wall Friday. He is not expected to be out long-term, Kapler said. Pirates: 1B Colin Moran (groin) fielded ground balls hit directly at him for the first time Saturday, Shelton said. He was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday. UP NEXT Giants LHP Alex Wood (4-0, 1.80 ERA) will look to keep cruising as he faces Pirates RHP Mitch Keller (2-4, 7.81) on Sunday. Wood hasn’t allowed more than two runs in five starts this season. Keller lasted 3 1/3 after getting tagged for seven runs his last time out against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Wes Crosby, The Associated Press
