Trump continues media feud on foreign trip

On a foreign trip that will include his first summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Trump pursued his feud with cable news networks, especially CNN, during a press conference in Poland.

The president went on to complain that NBC’s coverage of him showed insufficient gratitude for the profits he generated for the network as host of “The Apprentice.”

Appearing with Polish President Andrezj Duda, Trump was asked about his Sunday tweet, which included a video of him clotheslining a figure representing CNN, and the network’s response.

“I think what CNN did was unfortunate for them,” said Trump. “As you know, now they have some pretty serious problems. They have been fake news for a long time. They have been covering me in a very dishonest way.”

Trump then addressed Duda, asking him, “Do you have that, also, by the way, Mr. President?”

The Polish president responded with a faint smile.

“NBC is equally as bad despite the fact that I made them a fortune with ‘The Apprentice,’” continued Trump, “but they forgot that. I will say that CNN has taken it too seriously and I think that they have hurt themselves very badly. Very, very badly. And what we want to see in the United States is — honest, beautiful, free but honest — press. We want to see fair press. I think it’s a very important thing. We don’t want fake news. By the way, not everybody is fake news. But we don’t want fake news, bad thing. Very bad for our country.”

David Martosko, a political editor for the Daily Mail, asked Trump about the tweet. Last month Martosko interviewed for a position at the White House, writing, “I was honored to briefly discussed the possibility of joining President Trump’s administration as press secretary or in another senior role. At this time, however, I have chosen not to take the discussions farther.” Following the press conference, Martosko got in a brief Twitter spat with CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta, which included a “boo-yah” response to a tweet from Donald Trump Jr.

According to a Washington Post story last week, some advisers to the president were upset with his attacks on “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski because they felt it overshadowed the “clearer heroes and villains” of the CNN feud.

Trump is on his second foreign trip as president, which will include a visit to the G-20 summit in Germany.
