I collect candles. I don’t do it intentionally, but I can’t resist a great scent. That said, there are a few things I don’t like about candles, including the fact that they produce soot and that you obviously can’t leave them burning all day and night. So, instead of candles, I guess I’m more interested in collecting scents in general.

While scrolling through Instagram, I usually get ads for the Pura Smart Fragrance Diffuser — so I decided to try it. And I’m glad I did. I love how it makes my home smell, and I feel safe using it day and night.

Essentially, the Pura Smart Fragrance Diffuser is a plug-in oil diffuser. However, it’s different than those from Glade or Bath & Body Works in that it connects with your phone via an app to dispense just the right amount of fragrance exactly when you want it. It also can hold two scents at a time, so you can switch between them depending on your mood or time of day.

For example, I put a clean linen scent in my Pura and scheduled it to diffuse between 7 a.m. and noon. When I wake up, my apartment smells fresh, and I feel ready for the day. I scheduled a second, more relaxing spa scent to diffuse after dinner between 8 p.m. and midnight to help me unwind before bed. Additionally, I can use the app to crank up the intensity of a scent or dial it down. Plus, the diffuser has an optional nightlight, and I can change its color from standard yellow to bright hues like pink or blue.

However, the best thing about the Pura, in my opinion, is that it offers so many of my favorite candle scents in oil form. For example, it offers fragrances from high-end brands like Capri Blue, NEST New York, Anthropologie, LAFCO, Homesick, Tommy Bahama and more. Right now, my favorites are Capri Blue’s Blue Jean and LAFCO Retreat, but I can’t wait to diffuse my favorite Anthropologie pumpkin spice scent this fall.

One thing to note is that, yes, it’s hard to buy fragrances online if you’ve never smelled them before. Pura offers an online fragrance quiz so that you can find the right scent based on your preferences, and the brand also categorizes its fragrances as floral, woody, citrus or fresh. Additionally, if you order a scent you’re not too crazy about, Pura will refund you or let you choose a new one at no cost within 30 days.

You can get the Pura Smart Fragrance Diffuser on the brand’s website or at stores like Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Anthropologie and Sephora. The diffuser costs $44 on its own, and the fragrances range from $8.40 to $12.60.

Personally, I think it’s a great gift for yourself or friends and family. (College students banned from burning candles in their dorms would probably love it as well.) Instead of burning a candle, this diffuser is a safer way to enjoy your favorite scents all day and all night. I can’t wait to have friends over just so they can smell my home.
