Are Tri-Rail and Amtrak running in South Florida? What stopped the trains?

Tri-Rail passengers have a variety of transit options at each station.

Commuters who rely on Tri-Rail to get up and down South Florida went to bed wondering how they might get to work or school on Wednesday morning after trains stopped running Tuesday afternoon before rush hour.

At about 12:15 a.m. Tri-Rail announced service would resume as normal for its trains. Operations also are back for CSX freight trains on the corridor that runs near Interstate 95.

The South Florida Rail Corridor agency resolved a system issue that affected the entire corridor on Tuesday afternoon, the agency announced after midnight Wednesday, about nine hours after trains stopped and buses were deloyed to whisk stranded Tri-Rail passengers from station to station.

“The SFRTA had to make adjustments to its network infrastructure in order to resolve the issue that affected the dispatch and radio communications required to run trains. A root analysis will be performed to further understand the cause of this rare occurrence and avoid a repeated episode,” the agency and Tri-Rail shared on social media Wednesday.

Passengers can visit tri-rail.com to sign up for alerts and follow Tri-Rail’s Facebook and Twitter pages, or call 800-874-7245 between 5 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays for information on service updates.
