Was your trash pickup delayed? These 2022 holidays will push back collection in Kansas City

If your trash was delayed recently, it might be due to a trash holiday, like Labor Day. Mark you calendars with Kansas City’s adjusted trash and recycling pickup schedule.

There was a one-day delay on trash pick up on Monday, Sept. 5, so if your scheduled trash pickup day was Monday, that means it was picked up on Tuesday, Sept 6. If it’s Tuesday, it will be picked up Wednesday and so on and so forth.

Here are the following holidays that will delay trash pickup by a day in 2022:

  • Labor Day - Sept. 5

  • Veterans Day - Nov. 11. It falls on a Friday, so trash, recycling and bulky items will be picked up Nov. 12

  • Thanksgiving Day - Nov. 24. Thursday’s pick up happens on Friday, Nov. 25 and Friday’s collection will take place on Saturday, Nov. 26.

  • Monday, Dec. 26. Christmas is on a Sunday, so the Monday after will be recognized as a holiday.

Amnesty weeks happen twice each year and allow Kansas City residents to put out up to 12 trash bags without a tag, as long as each bag weighs less than 40 pounds and don’t contain hazardous waste, bulky items or leaves and brush.. Those weeks happen July 4 through July 9 and Dec. 21 through Dec. 31.

If your trash isn’t picked up, or you have a question about trash collection or another city service, you can call 311.

A reminder that many areas surrounding Kansas City use private trash collection, so it’s different businesses that pick up the trash, not the government. You can search your address to see if Christmas will disrupt your trash service on most private collectors’ sites.
