More Kentucky basketball recruiting links: Shaedon Sharpe, media day and new rankings

Star basketball recruit Shaedon Sharpe shared a photo of himself in a Kentucky uniform following his official visit to UK in June.

No. 1-ranked basketball recruit Shaedon Sharpe will be coming to Kentucky at some point. It’s just a matter of when.

Speculation picked up in recent days that Sharpe might be leaning toward leaving high school early and enrolling at UK during the semester break this season, a path that would allow him to join the Wildcats for the second half of the 2021-22 season. UK Coach John Calipari was asked a question about the possibility of midseason transfers during the program’s media day Wednesday, and his answer eventually spun into the situation that led Hamidou Diallo to leave high school and enroll early at Kentucky a few seasons ago, the same path Sharpe could follow in a couple of months.

“We’ve done that once,” Calipari said. “It’s not something I look for, but if it happens and the kid can really benefit by practicing and being a part of our team and getting a head start, that’s fine.”

If Sharpe does enroll for this season, the plan would be for him to practice with the Wildcats and take advantage of a college strength and conditioning program before making his on-court Kentucky debut to start the 2022-23 season. In an interview posted by Rivals.com on Wednesday, it was acknowledged that the UK commitment is considering early enrollment, but he was not asked for an update on that situation. He simply said he was looking forward to getting to college and learning from Calipari.
