The BBC announced Friday it has halted filming of hit television show Top Gear following a December crash that left presenter Freddie Flintoff was seriously injured.

The broadcasting network said in a statement it has completed its investigation into the incident where, according to The Independent, the Morgan Super 3 Flintoff was driving at the show's Surrey, England track flipped and slid along the pavement at high speed.

Flintoff's son Corey, 16, described the incident back in December as a "pretty nasty crash," and that his dad was "lucky to be alive."

"Under the circumstances, we feel it would be inappropriate to resume making series 34," the BBC said in a statement.

"We have sincerely apologized to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery.

"We understand [halting the show] will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we'll make a judgement about how best to continue later this year."

This isn't the first time Flintoff has crashed while filming for Top Gear. Since joining the crew as a presenter in 2018, the former professional cricket player has had several incidents behind the wheel, the most severe of which saw him crash at 124 mph during a drag race.
