‘Too much emphasis on immigration’ to solve Canada’s labour woes

From construction to manufacturing to hospitality, Canadian companies are struggling to find enough workers. London-based Capital Economics expects the flow of immigrants that have long filled Canada’s labour voids to remain weak into 2020.

Sean Speer, a fellow-in-residence at the Public Policy Forum, says policy makers often place too much emphasis on immigration as a solution to worker shortages. He sees technology, training, and engaging underrepresented groups like Canada’s Indigenous peoples as key to solving the country's labour imbalances.
