Yahoo Movies Tom Holland Discusses Spider-Man: Homecoming & That Comic-Con Footage
It’s been a week since fans saw the first footage of Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, but now its star Tom Holland has talked about what we saw and how ‘Captain America: Civil War’ will impact the solo outing.
Speaking to io9, the latest actor to play the role of the web-slinger was eager to address the meta footage that appeared at this year’s Comic-Con showing Peter Parker watching a YouTube video of himself as Spidey fighting in that epic airport scene from ‘Civil War’.
When quizzed about the reasons why Peter was indulging in the video during class, Holland had to be careful what was said in case of spoilers and in keeping with what he was allowed to give away.
He did, however, surmise it was “like when you go on holiday and you come home, back to school and you’re like ‘wow, I wish I was on holiday again.’”
Holland also shared that the SDCC footage - which was based around the classroom and introduced the audience to a number of his classmates - was exactly what he and director Jon Watts wanted to make the film about.
“I remember sitting down with Jon, a year ago, and saying ‘What do you want to make?’ And he told me he wants to make a movie that’s real. About a real high school student and what would he do if he got superpowers? And that’s exactly what we’ve been doing. And I think that trailer really demonstrates Jon’s vision and what it is he wants to create and I’m behind it 100%.”
While many comicbook fans were no doubt rolling their eyes at the prospect of another film about Peter Parker discovering his powers and focusing on the origins aspects, we know this won’t be the case here. In fact there does seem to be specific direction and intend here as to where Spidey is going in the MCU.
For starters, it’s perhaps wise to have a little faith in a Marvel version of Spider-Man because, let’s face it, it’s been a long time coming. Secondly, Watts and Holland seem intent on making a coming-of-age, high school movie rather one about Peter Parker simply discovering his powers and transitioning into manhood.
Marvel’s track record suggests there’s a very good chance their version will work, implying a teen focus on the world of Spider-Man and even tapping into a nostalgic teen movies of the ‘80s. A fresh approach from Disney and Marvel should give fans every reason to be excited, resulting in a more original reboot than the Andrew Garfield-starring Sony films, that’s for sure.
