Tom Hardy has landed his next lead movie role opposite Mahershala Ali in upcoming crime thriller 77 Blackout.

The film will follow five New York City police officers who go rogue by planning to rob three prolific, criminal groups – the Hong Kong Triads, the Italian Mafia, and the Harlem Mob – during one night in 1977 (via Deadline).

However, when a blackout plunges the city into darkness on the night of the planned robbery, the crew is "forced to navigate a hellish landscape as years of being overworked and underpaid forces each of them to confront their own morality".

Frank John Hughes is writing 77 Blackout's script with revisions by Cary Joji Fukunaga, who is also directing.

Hardy will next appear in upcoming biker movie The Bikeriders alongside a star-studded cast, including Elvis actor Austin Butler, Killing Eve's Jodie Comer and The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus.

The film, written and directed by Jeff Nichols, is inspired by Danny Lyon's 1968 photobook of the same name and tells the story of the Vandals MC, a Chicago-based motorcycle club who evolve from a rebellious outlaw group to a sinister gang.

Meanwhile, Ali is currently gearing up for his role as the titular superhero in Marvel's upcoming Blade reboot.

The Oscar winner provided fans with an encouraging update back in December following the film’s multiple delays, confirming that production would be back in action "relatively soon".

"We're working on it. That's the best I could tell you," he said. "I'm really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we'll be back at it relatively soon. I'm sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who's on board and who's leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that."
