Tom Cruise is taking on the next Alejandro G. Iñárritu film.

On Thursday, a rep for Cruise, 61, confirmed to PEOPLE that the actor will be starring in the upcoming film.

So far, plot details are being kept under wraps. The only thing known about the project is the writers: Iñárritu, Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone. The director, Giacobone and Dinelaris previously worked on the 2014 Oscar-winner Birdman.

The Hollywood Reporter first confirmed the news, adding that Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are in talks to acquire the project, with Deadline reporting Cruise will produce alongside Legendary.

Last month, Cruise signed a strategic deal with Warner Bros., where he will work with CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy on both original and franchise projects.

Cruise has a lot on his plate. In January, THR reported that Cruise might be on board for a Top Gun 3 following the success of Top Gun: Maverick, written by Christopher McQuarrie, Eric Singer and Ehren Kruger.

The report said that Kruger is already writing, and sources told the outlet that Maverick director Joe Kosinski is also being tapped to return to the director’s chair.

While Cruise has yet to publicly commit to continuing the franchise, Miles Teller, who plays Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw in the film, said in July 2022 that he and Cruise had "been having some conversations" about the possibility of another movie.

At the time, the actor, 36, said, "It's all up to Tom.”

Glen Powell, who played Lt. Jake 'Hangman' Seresin, made similar comments to PEOPLE in August 2022.

"There's definitely been conversations [but] it's above my pay grade," he said at the time. "It's really up to Tom. It's up to [producer Jerry Bruckheimer]. It's up to all the powers that be, but if they call me back to Miramar, I'll be there."

The action movie was a major success coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, both with viewers and within Hollywood. Steven Spielberg even told Cruise that he "saved Hollywood's a--" with the film during an Oscars nominees luncheon.
