Toddler unconscious for 5 minutes in near-drowning at Oklahoma campground, cops say

A 2-year-old who was pulled from a lake was unconscious for 5 minutes before first responders revived her, authorities in Oklahoma said.

The Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office hadresponded to a callon June 18 about a possible drowning at the Wahoo Bay campground, according to a July 1 news release.

Within 2 minutes of the call, deputies arrived at the campground, which is at Fort Gibson Lake, about 51 miles southeast of Tulsa.

Four people were standing by the edge of the water, waving their arms and calling to the deputy, body camera footage showed. A 2-year-old child lay on her back on the ground by them, still partially in the water.

The child had been unconscious for 5 minutes, the family said. Deputy M. King immediately began resuscitation, turning the child on her side and patting her back.

“You fight, you fight, baby,” the family urged in the video. “Breathe, honey, breathe.”

The child spit up and vomited, authorities reported.

“Honey, come back. You fight,” the family said. “Come on, you can do it, just breathe, honey.”

“She’s breathing,” the deputy performing resuscitation called out.

A helicopter arrived and took the child to a hospital in Tulsa, authorities said.

Sgt. Jeff Halcare of the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office told McClatchy News that the child “has since been released from the hospital and is doing great.”

The child is from the Coweta, Oklahoma area.
