Hoda Kotb landed in hot water with some Star Wars fans and fellow Today show cohosts Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, Craig Melvin and Carson Daly when she seemingly failed to recognize Tuesday as Star Wars Day and know the meaning behind the phrase "May the fourth be with you."
Hoda blurted out, "All the Trekkies in the house," confusing Star Trek and Star Wars.
Fans watching Today at home were quick to point out the blunder on Twitter.
Hoda Kotb is no Jedi Master, but I still love her dearly.
The Today show star landed in hot water with some Star Wars fans and fellow cohosts Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, Craig Melvin and Carson Daly when she seemingly failed to recognize Tuesday as Star Wars Day and know the meaning behind the phrase "May the fourth be with you."
During the NBC morning show, Savannah turned to both Al and Carson and told them, "May the fourth be with you." Not understanding that "May the fourth be with you" is a play on Master Obi-Wan Kenobi's famous Star Wars quote "May the force be with you," Hoda then blurted out, "All the Trekkies in the house."
Shocked that Hoda had confused Star Trek and Star Wars, Savannah immediately shot back, "We're not Trekkies!" Meanwhile, Craig, Al and Carson all joined in a chorus of "wow"s, "oh"s, and "get out!"s upon realizing that Hoda didn't know what "May the fourth be with you" actually meant. As for Hoda, she just sat there giggling to herself.
Joking that there might be online blowback from Hoda's mixup, Carson warned Hoda to delete her Twitter account immediately. Poking more fun at Hoda, Al then jokingly suggested that Hoda leave the set and return for the fourth hour.
"I saw the first one a long time ago, I'm not a Star Wars person," Hoda admitted when Al asked if she had ever seen Star Wars. "I'm sorry. I dressed as Yoda for Halloween one year."
Still coming to terms with Hoda's gaffe and saying she wasn't a fan of the George Lucas franchise, Al told her: "I've loved you for so long, but now, it's like I don't even know you." Savannah hilariously added, "I feel betrayed" and later joked that Craig was having "hot flashes" from being so surprised.
Eventually, the cast moved on and all was well again. But those watching Today at home were quick to point out the blunder on Twitter. "Wow! Hoda Kotb just dissed the #starwars community! She just called us #trekkies! 😂😂😂" one fan noted. "@hodakotb oh my with the May the 4th be with you...." a different fan tweeted.
Well, at least Hoda will know better for next May 4. Star Wars fan or not, we are still totally behind her — and we know her Today show friends and fans are too.
