Al Roker and his wife, Deborah Roberts, are joining forces for an exciting project close to their hearts.

On TV, Al gives Today viewers weather updates and shares the latest headlines with his NBC third hour crew. Over on ABC, Deborah contributes her award-winning reporting skills to the network’s various news shows. But offscreen, the husband-wife duo has also been hard at work turning the historical fiction novel The Personal Librarian into a show for everyone to enjoy.

When The New York Times bestseller by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray hit bookshelves in June 2021, it earned instant praise from bibliophiles, including Deborah. According to Variety, she was the one who convinced the authors to work with Al’s production company, Al Roker Entertainment (ARE), and bring their words to life on the small screen.

After getting them onboard, Al announced the incredible news on Instagram with a heartwarming photo of himself and Deborah. “Big News! @debrobertsabc and I are developing a new project for your viewing pleasure,” he wrote in a January 26 post. "'The Personal Librarian' is a favorite in our household, and I'm beyond excited to executive produce this limited series with my wife through Al Roker Entertainment."

Upon hearing about Al and Deborah’s next venture together, fans flooded the comments section with congratulatory messages. “Ahhh!!! So excited for this! Power couple and role models 🙌 congratulations 🍾,” one person wrote. “Wow!! How fantastic & congratulations!!” another added. “This is wonderful news! So love this book! Good luck on the project!!” a different fan said. “I love this book, can’t wait to see what you guys are doing 👏👏👏👏,” a follower commented. “I couldn’t put this book down! It was fabulous. Looking forward to your project,” someone else noted.

On her own Instagram, Deborah expressed how thrilled she is to be working on bringing The Personal Librarian in front of more people. “From the jump, I knew this story of Belle da Costa Greene (Greener) who rose to prominence in the art world while holding a big secret, was a winner. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Now we are taking my obsession to the next level!"

For those who haven’t read this one yet, The Personal Librarian tells the story of J. P. Morgan’s personal librarian Belle da Costa Greene. Though she is a Black woman with a rich family history, she is forced to pass for white with her light skin in order to protect her loved ones and her legacy.

Speaking with Variety, the executive producers revealed that they hope the limited series will be picked up by a streaming service. As for when folks can expect to see it, Al says there is no timeline yet but it could go either way. “Things can take time or they can all of a sudden click and you are off to the races. I’m hoping it’s the latter.”
