Fans say irritating quirk 'ruined' most 'Friends' episodes for them: 'I can't unhear it'

Friends fans, you might wanna look away for this one.

TikTok user @cts.trphe shared a video in which he pointed out Jennifer Aniston’s “vocal tic” in the show that is impossible to ignore once you’re aware of it.

“What I’m about to say is going to ruin your life. It’s going to ruin your life especially if you are a big fan of the show Friends,” he said in the clip. “If you’re a big fan of that show, I’m begging you, scroll away because I’m going to ruin your life.”

He went on to show footage of Aniston’s character Rachel Green starting dozens of sentences with a throat-clearing “ahem” sound.

According to @cts.trphe, she does this in pretty much every role. Fans said it wasn’t a tic, though — just one of the things she does when she’s acting.

“A lot of people have crutches when acting when they don’t know what else to do,” one user said.

“It’s just because the situation is awkward so the character tries to break the silence, Jen just does this as part of the character,” another wrote.

“Probably just a bad habit, it’s cute to me,” a third commented.

The montage @cts.trphe shared was first posted in 2019. The original poster, YouTuber Lane Tarr, claimed Aniston cleared her throat 200 times over the course of the series.

A shorter version of the same concept was shared in 2016, proving that this is not a new idea. Aniston’s cough even made Cracked’s 2016 list of celebrity quirks “you can never unsee.”

Aniston also told GQ in 2012 that she had recently quit smoking. Commenters suggested that her throat-clearing might be a result of her past cigarette use.

Some think it’s too hard to look past the throat-clearing to enjoy the show.

“I can’t unhear it,” one TikTok user wrote.

“It has always driven me nuts,” another said.

Some fans didn’t mind the quirk at all, though.

“I already noticed this and I think it’s endearing,” one commented.

“It’s quirky and cute,” another said.
