Chanel defends ‘embarrassing’ advent calendar following backlash: 'We will be much more cautious’

TikTok is roasting Chanel’s $825 advent calendar for its lackluster contents despite a hefty price tag.

No shade, but it's time to stop mooching off your parents' Amazon Prime — here's why

Elise Harmon (@eliseharmon) was one of the first TikTokers to start posting about her disappointment in the product. She uploaded a series of unboxing videos.

"I am barely hanging on over here, y'all," she captioned one of her videos.

Harmon's TikTok series has since caught the attention of several media outlets and even prompted Chanel to comment on the controversy. On Dec. 6, Chanel responded to the negative feedback and denied claims that the brand deleted its TikTok account.

“This controversy is a bit of a shame because it was not what Chanel intended. Chanel thought it would please some of its customers by offering this type of product. Evidently, we see that you have to be careful and therefore, in future, we will certainly be much more cautious,” Bruno Pavlovsky, president of fashion and president of Chanel, told Women's Wear Daily.

Harmon's first video, where she introduced the advent calendar, has almost 18 million views.

"Am I crazy? Absolutely," she began the now-viral clip. "But I've never seen a Chanel advent calendar, so let's see if it's worth the hype."

At first, Harmon seemed impressed with the calendar’s packaging, which was an oversized white Chanel bottle. Inside were boxes of various sizes with numbers indicating the dates in December.

“But it starts at day number five,” Harmon pointed out. “I guess for Chanel No. 5? I’m kinda bummed.”

Harmon went on to open the box for Dec. 9, which she said “looks very promising.” Inside was a sheet of stickers and a bunch of tissue packaging.

“This has to be a joke,” she said, laughing. “Stickers? STICKERS?”

But then, the box for Dec. 7 had some Chanel hand cream, which retails for $50.

In a follow-up video, Harmon opened the box for Dec. 8, which was similar in size to the one that had the hand cream. Inside was an empty pouch.

“I can’t make this up,” she said. “It’s just a dust bag.”

In addition to the hand cream, the big-name items in the calendar appear to be a full-sized bottle of Chanel No. 5 perfume and full-sized nail polish. Otherwise, the rest of the boxes contain stickers, a keychain, mini lipsticks and a string bracelet that Harmon described as “giving plastic bottle cap.”

Chanel hasn’t come out with a statement about the advent calendar, but in another video, Harmon alleged that the company had blocked her TikTok account.

“They blocked me! What’s not clicking, Chanel? Something’s wrong!” she said.

Chanel’s website actually lists the full contents of the advent calendar, and at the time of writing this, it’s sold out. The calendar also appears to go up to Dec. 31, so despite starting on Dec. 5, there is still the same number of days and boxes as a regular advent calendar.

Commenters on TikTok encouraged Harmon to keep posting updates on the calendar’s contents.

"Chanel should be embarrassed," one commented.

“THEY WRONGED YOU,” another said.

“The audacity of stickers…” someone wrote.
